1998 VW Classic Weedend

Celebrating its 12th birthday, the Classic Weekend has risen to be
the most coveted VW gathering in the world. This year was no let down!! The
event was kicked-off by the SOTO meet at Long Beach Veterans Stadium on
Saturday morning. It was estimated that over 400 early Type II's attended
this years show. Next on the agenda was the Toy and Memorabilia show held at
the host hotel, the Irvine Holiday Inn. I'm like a kid in a candy shop at
this point of the weekend! I picked-up an original VW accessory book from the
1970's, and a few Beetle sales brochures from the early 1960's. The Gene Berg
Rally capped-off the day with a cruise through the streets of Orange County.

The grand finale was set on Sunday in the form of the VW Classic.
Where else can you see 10 Hebmullers, 20 Barn Door Buses and vintage VW
racers like the original Empi Inch Pincher car (my personal favorite!). Aside
from all of the great cars and vendor displays, it allows me the opportunity
to meet our patrons. There is just something special about finally being able
to place a face on a name!!

If you have the opportunity, I would highly recommend planning for
next years weekend. Please stop by our booth and say HELLO!!

Should you ever have comments or suggestions, please don't hesitate to
write to me directly at <TMoore@wolfsburgwest.com>.
Cordially,

Tony Moore
President

3. TECHNICAL TIP OF THE MONTH

>>> Headlight beam adjustment for left-hand-drive Beetles and Buses

Tools required:

1 screwdriver (1966 and earlier Beetles and 1967 and earlier
Buses, slotted. 1967 and later Bugs and 1967 and
later Buses, Phillips.)
6 feet of butcher's paper, approx. 2 foot in width
1 roll of making tape
1 felt tip pen or marker
1 adult assistant (approx. 150 lbs.)
30 feet of nylon cord
1 measuring tape (25 feet)
A few pages of a newspaper (or other material to cover headlamp)

Proper headlight beam alignment is necessary for the safe operation
of any automobile. Elements such as wear-and-tear and headlamp replacement
both contribute to the misalignment of the headlamp beam. Most automobile
repair facilities are capable of aligning your car's headlamps; but we think
the task is simple (and much easier on your pocketbook!!).

Before you begin, check all four tires and inflate to the proper
pressure. Park your car on a level surface area with the headlamps 25 feet
from a vertical wall. From the exact center of the headlight, measure this
distance to the ground. Attach butcher's paper to the vertical wall, keeping
the distance (headlight to ground) in the approximate center of the paper.
Using your marker, draw a horizontal line (the measurement from the headlight
center to ground) across the entire length of paper. We will refer to this
line X.
Using the nylon cord, have your assistant hold the cord at the exact
center of the left headlight. Extend the cord outward towards line X,
following a straight path. Mark the point of the straight line formed by the
nylon cord onto line X. At this location, draw a vertical line the entire height
of the butcher paper. We will refer to this as line Y. Perform the same
procedure for the right side. Label this line Y as well.
Measuring 2 inches to the RIGHT of BOTH Line Y's, mark a vertical
line intersecting line X. We will refer to both lines as A. Cover the right
headlamp with newspaper (or other material). Have your assistant sit in the
driver's seat of the car, and turn on the headlamp switch. Make sure the
headlamps are set to the low beam position. Observe the light reflection on
the butcher paper. A properly aimed beam has the upper edge of its high
intensity zone on the horizontal line X, and left edge on line A. Adjust left
side if necessary.
To adjust beam, turn the screws located on the outside of the
headlight rim for 1966 and earlier Beetles and 1967 and earlier Buses. For
1967 and later Bugs and 1968 and later Buses, remove the chrome headlight
rim. The adjusting screws will be located on the headlamp housing at the 12
and 9 o'clock position.
Remove the paper from the right headlamp and attach to the left side.
Follow the same procedure for right headlamp beam alignment.

4. DID YOU KNOW?

In March 1955, beginning with chassis number 20-117903, Volkswagen did away
with 16" wheels and installed 15" wheels on Buses. Starting with the model
year of 1963, all 1 ton payload vehicles (such as the ambulance) were
equipped with 14" wheels, while all other Bus models were still equipped with
15" wheels. In December 1963 (during the 1964 model year), beginning with
chassis number 1222026, VW installed 14" wheels on all Buses, regardless of
model.
15" wheels used 6.40 X 15 tires
14" wheels used 7.00 X 14 tires (all models, including the 1 ton
models)
